BRICS National Security Advisers' Meeting to Be Held in India on June 22-23 Under Ajit Doval's Chairmanship
India will host the BRICS National Security Advisers' Meeting on June 22-23, 2026, under the chairmanship of National Security Advisor Ajit Doval. The high-level discussions will focus on non-traditional security challenges, emerging technologies, counter-terrorism cooperation and information security as India leads the BRICS grouping for the fourth time.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the National Security Advisers and Heads of Delegation of BRICS member countries will exchange views on the theme, "Non-traditional Security Challenges Confronting the World Today." Discussions will focus on the rapidly changing nature of national security threats and the role of new technologies in creating and intensifying emerging security risks.
The meeting will also review the outcomes of the recently held BRICS Joint Working Groups on Counter-Terrorism and on Security in the Use of Information and Communication Technologies. The deliberations are expected to strengthen cooperation among member nations in addressing common security concerns and enhancing coordination in critical sectors.
The gathering comes as India assumes the BRICS Chairship for the fourth time in 2026. India had previously held the chairmanship in 2012, 2016 and 2021. The country's presidency of the grouping is guided by the theme, "Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability," which reflects the people-centric and humanity-first approach outlined by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the 2025 Rio Summit.
BRICS currently comprises eleven major emerging markets and developing countries, including Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates. The grouping serves as an important platform for consultation and cooperation on contemporary issues with global and regional significance, as well as matters related to international political and economic governance.
The BRICS 2026 agenda has expanded significantly beyond its original focus on economic issues of mutual concern and is now structured around three core pillars: political and security affairs, economy and finance, and cultural and people-to-people exchanges. Cooperation within the bloc continues to widen across a broad range of global issues, including counter-terrorism, climate change, food and energy security, the international economic and financial situation, telecommunications, agriculture, labour and employment, international financial architecture, trade and matters related to the World Trade Organization.
The National Security Advisers' Meeting is expected to reinforce BRICS cooperation at a time of rapidly evolving geopolitical and technological challenges, highlighting the grouping's growing role in addressing complex global issues and strengthening collective security among emerging economies.
